When Walton Maritime Museum’s lease with Tendring District Council came to an end in April 2021, the Trust tried in vain to find an alternative local venue to house its archives and artefacts relating to Walton. By chance, an opportunity to buy a redundant community asset - the old ambulance station in Pole Barn Lane - proved irresistible. Although now part of Frinton, with its street numbers running from west to east, Pole Barn Lane was once part of Walton when its street numbers ran east to west. Money from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and other sources, has enabled us to transform the building into an exhibition area and meeting room. The exhibition covers the genesis of the area’s geology which then underpins the development of farming, industry, and urbanisation, ultimately leading to our tourist-based economy.

Digitisation of our archive and artefact collections by a team of volunteers is now well underway, but this will take several years to complete by which time we will have a better grasp of where gaps exist in our collections and what we should continue to seek out. The museum is open every weekend from Easter to the end of September as well as Tuesday mornings from 10am to noon. Entry is free but donations are appreciated so that we may continue our work well into the future.
ACCESSIBILITY: There is parking for blue-badge holders, ramped access with handrails for wheelchair users as well as a disabled toilet. There are cabinet as well as wall-mounted displays. There are rest facilities available in the meeting room, when not otherwise in use, and a small patio area to the rear.
